How did one non-private label listing cost a seller their account and $20k?

Small and independent brands make up two-thirds of Amazon's sales. No doubt the retailer wants to further empower them through new AI-powered tools.

However, the important question is: Would the benefits serve sellers more—or the platform?

As for our means to empower sellers, you’ll surely be the one to benefit from the information we have for you today.

  • Elevate your ecommerce business 🪜
  • Tools for success in 2025 💯

BLACK MARKET

Can you imagine paying $1,000 monthly for inventory you can’t sell?

This is the case of one seller who described their Amazon selling journey as “the worst experience of my life in business.”

👀 What happened?

  • A small business owner took to Seller Central forums to vent their frustrations. Their account got suspended but they were still being charged for stored inventory!
  • As usual, Amazon requested they submit invoices and other documentation but then rejected their appeals.
  • This issue cost the seller approximately $20k (and counting!). Their private label inventory is stored in FBA and AWD (and cannot be sold).

👹 The culprit

The seller said they “purchased a Meta controller directly from the official store and sold it on Amazon.” Seasoned sellers were quick to point out that this was their mistake.

REMEMBER: Buying from an official store guarantees your product is authentic. But, it doesn’t give you the right to resell the product on Amazon.

The seller added, “Amazon took away my motivation to do business. They took away my opportunity to grow, all because of a simple mistake.”

It’s a bitter pill to swallow. But what seems like a “simple” mistake is a big deal to brands. 💊

What you should know moving forward

Ecommerce laws vary and change depending on the country; ecommerce platforms must comply with these policies. While tightening regulations are good for buyers, it can be a pain for sellers.

A prevalent issue is copyright and brand authorization. Due to the rise of counterfeits and fraud, sellers have been repeatedly asked to submit documents and receipts to prove authenticity. Brand owners safeguard their business through brand gating.

Moving forward, if you want to resell any product, contact the brand first. Request official authorization to resell their products to avoid the painful risk of getting suspended. 📌
