Amazon Just Made a $1,000,000 Insurance Policy Mandatory — Even If You've Never Hit $10K in Sales

Amazon just yanked the safety net that let small sellers skip liability insurance — now a $1 million policy is mandatory from your very first sale in certain categories. Meanwhile DoorDash is buying Instacart for $17 billion, scammers are using AI to build entire fake storefronts instead of just fake products, and three more marketplace shifts are worth knowing before peak season lands in full.

Here's what changed, and what it means for your business.

AMAZON NEWS

Amazon's advertising business pulled in roughly $19.6 billion in Q3 2026, up about 12% year-over-year — and Amazon says its AI "Ads AEffective November 2, 2026, Amazon quietly killed the safety net small sellers in risky categories used to lean on: the $10,000-a-month sales exemption from carrying commercial liability insurance. List in an "enhanced safety" category now, and you need a $1 million policy from your very first sale — no revenue threshold required.

🔍 What's happening

  • A September 3 notice to Seller Forums added two new insurance triggers: sellers in "enhanced safety" categories must carry commercial liability cover regardless of sales volume, and Mainland China-based sellers must buy new policies exclusively through Amazon's own Insurance Accelerator, per PPC Land.
  • Amazon names children's products, cosmetics, ingestibles, and lithium-battery products explicitly, but a Seller Central list reproduced by industry trackers shows 11 categories in total — including mattresses, tires, small kitchen appliances, home medical devices, and water/marine safety gear, per EcomCrew.
  • The required coverage — at least $1 million per occurrence and in aggregate — hasn't changed. What changed is who has to carry it: the old $10K/month gross-proceeds trigger under Amazon's Business Solutions Agreement no longer applies to these categories, per My Amazon Guy.

What this means for sellers

Check your Seller Central notifications today, not next week — if you're flagged and don't upload a Certificate of Insurance, Amazon suspends the listing or the account, not just a warning. If you sell in any of the 11 flagged categories, even as a side hustle doing a few sales a month, price out a policy now; brokers and Amazon's own Insurance Accelerator can both get you compliant, but expect a short queue as peak-season sellers scramble at the same time.

DoorDash Is Buying Instacart for $17 Billion — and Retail Media Just Got a New Power Player

DoorDash has agreed to acquire Instacart for $17 billion, merging the two biggest names in US delivery and creating a combined data-and-advertising machine that could challenge Amazon and Walmart's grip on online grocery.

🔍 What's happening

  • Instacart is the largest third-party grocery delivery platform by sales, with roughly 2,200 store partners across nearly 100,000 locations and an estimated 65% share of the US third-party grocery delivery market, per Fast Company.
  • DoorDash's DashPass members already place about three-quarters of its US grocery and retail orders, and CEO Tony Xu calls grocery "the fastest-growing part of our marketplace business" — the deal pushes DoorDash further past restaurant delivery into a true Amazon/Walmart grocery competitor, per Fast Company.
  • Both companies have been building real-time, in-store data tools — Instacart maps shelves live, while DoorDash couriers photograph shelves while picking orders — and combined, that data could show CPG brands which products are selling, lagging, or getting substituted, a serious new retail-media and advertising play, per ITV News.

What this means for sellers

If you sell grocery, CPG, or household goods, a combined DoorDash-Instacart becomes a third major retail-media buyer alongside Amazon Ads and Walmart Connect — expect new ad inventory and real-time shelf-data products to show up on your radar in 2027. If your brand sells through Instacart's retail partners today, watch for integration hiccups (data migrations, ad account changes) as the deal closes; it isn't final yet and still needs regulatory review.

AI Is Now Writing Its Own Fake Stores — and They're Fooling Holiday Shoppers in Record Numbers

Scammers used to fake a product. Now, per a new scam-tracking report, they're faking the entire store — full catalogs, size charts, return policies, and all — and AI is doing most of the writing.

🕵️ What's happening

  • Scamwise reviewed more than 250,000 shopping sites this holiday season and flagged over 100,000 as scams — a new fake store goes live roughly every three minutes, and four in ten were less than 90 days old when shoppers arrived, per Komando.
  • 74% of the flagged fake stores used AI-generated content, and of shoppers who arrived through an ad, 8 in 10 of those ads ran on Google or Meta — meaning scam storefronts are now buying real ad inventory on the same platforms legitimate sellers use, per All About Cookies.
  • The next risk layer is AI shopping agents themselves: in one experiment, an AI browsing assistant directed to a fake storefront entered saved card and address details and completed a purchase without asking for confirmation — a preview of what happens when "the AI bought it" replaces "I checked the site first," per All About Cookies.

What this means for sellers

Every AI-generated knockoff of your storefront or listing images dilutes trust in your actual brand, and a buyer who gets burned by a lookalike site often leaves the bad review on your real listing instead. Monitor for typosquatted domains and ad-driven impersonation of your brand name now, before Black Friday traffic peaks, and make sure your official storefront and support channels are unmistakable and easy for confused shoppers to find.

Quick Hits: Walmart Stretches Black Friday to 14 Days, Shopify's AI Agents Start Buying, and Reddit Locks Its Doors

Three more marketplace moves worth tracking as the holiday sprint officially begins:

  • 🗓️ Walmart is stretching its 2026 holiday deal events to 14 days, up from 10 last year — early Black Friday deals now start November 12, ahead of the core Black Friday sale (Nov 23-29) and Cyber Monday (Nov 30-Dec 2), per Retail Dive.
  • 🤖 Shopify says AI agents have started completing purchases for shoppers. On its Q3 2026 earnings call, president Harley Finkelstein called the volume "small but growing," alongside $119 billion in quarterly GMV and 32% revenue growth, per Shopify.
  • 🔒 Reddit is moving to a logged-in-only experience after losing more than 1 million search referrals a week as AI search tools answer questions directly instead of sending clicks through, per TechCrunch.

What this means for sellers

Longer sale windows mean less urgency works against you on Walmart specifically — plan a multi-week promo cadence instead of a single doorbuster. And as both AI shopping agents and AI search quietly reroute how shoppers find products (Shopify's agents, Reddit going dark to crawlers), make sure your listings, reviews, and brand mentions are structured cleanly enough for an AI summarizer to represent you accurately, since fewer shoppers are browsing the old-fashioned way.anly enough for an AI assistant to summarize correctly, and keep an eye on your returnless-refund rate if you sell into Europe.
