Online fraud is a growing issue for ecommerce merchants, with losses hitting $48 billion in 2023. That’s a 16% increase compared to the previous year, according to Juniper Research. 📈

As fraud risks rise, it’s clear that stronger security measures are needed. BiometricUpdate.com shared some of the solutions from key players in the industry:

1. Behavioral biometrics

By 2025, behavioral biometrics will play a huge role in preventing fraud. This technology tracks how users interact with websites or apps. It’s passive, working behind the scenes to keep transactions safe.

🤳 The key benefits of behavioral biometrics include:

  • Continuous authentication based on user behavior patterns;
  • Working alongside facial recognition and eID for stronger security; and
  • Being a standard tool for fraud prevention by next year.

2. Mastercard x Unzer

Mastercard’s new partnership with Unzer aims to enhance ecommerce payment security. The former’s Open Banking solution uses existing bank authentication methods, including biometrics, to process fast and secure payments. 🤝

This partnership means:

  • Faster, safer payments for merchants in Germany, Austria, and Denmark.
  • Biometric verification is integrated into the payment process.

3. UK’s payment strategy against digital fraud

BITES OF THE WEEK

ECOMMERCE NEWS

It’s official: Cyber Weekend 2024 broke records and predictions

The holidays are truly a happy one this year, especially for those who participated in this year’s Cyber Weekend. As reported by Digital Commerce 360, sales grew 5.8% year over year.

📊  Here are some facts about the record-breaking sales period:

  • New records for U.S. sales
    • U.S. ecommerce sales during Cyber Weekend alone (Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving) reached $10.9 billion! 💰
    • U.S. consumers spent $27.8 billion online from Thanksgiving through Sunday.
    • According to Adobe Analytics, Cyber Monday broke the record with $13.3 billion in online spending.
    • Cyber 5 has surpassed sales projections, locking in more than $41 billion in online sales.
  • Impressive global numbers
    • Cyber Weekend’s global online sales grew 8% year over year, with U.S. sales increasing by 9% and Europe seeing a 7% rise.
    • Global order volume also rose by 7.5%. 🌍

💡 Seller insights

It’s worth mentioning that there have been fewer Cyber 5 shoppers this year. The record sales are primarily due to falling ecommerce prices, which have been dropping for 26 consecutive months. This deflation made it easier for net-new demand to drive spending.

Despite the happy news, it’s better to stay cautious. Many retailers are concerned about supply chain costs and maintaining margins. This is especially true with the possible tariffs and higher fees.
