BIG IDEA

February 14th isn’t just about love—it’s also about sales. 🤑

Shoppers are gearing up to splurge! The sky’s the limit (or so we think)!

Moosend shared some love-filled facts and stats to help you craft campaigns that hit just the right romantic note.

Here are some highlights from WalletHub’s latest survey:

  • Men spend twice as much as women on Valentine’s Day gifts. (Hint: Make them your prime target when doing your campaigns!)
  • 9 million engagement proposals happen on Valentine’s Day.
  • Online dating spikes between Feb 1 to Feb 14—perfect timing for first-date-inspired promotions.

💌 Email campaigns

Email marketing continues to lead the charge for Valentine's Day sales. Here's a campaign breakdown by product selling category (January 15 – February 14):

  • Flowers: 38.3 campaigns, with an open rate of 17.2%.
  • Mass merchants: 21 campaigns, with an open rate of 15.2%.
  • Chocolate: 21.3 campaigns, with an open rate of 11%.
  • Jewelry: 7.4 campaigns, with an open rate of 9%.

Pro tip: A killer subject line is your key to success. Sweet, playful, and personalized wins the inbox battle every time.

🛍️ Consumer spending trends

Even after the pandemic’s disruption in 2021, which caused consumer spending to drop from $27.4 billion to $21.8 billion, spending rebounded by 2024 to $25.8 billion and has remained steady.

  • Candy (57%) tops the list, followed by greeting cards (40%) and flowers (39%).
  • On the flip side, clothing and perfumes are the least popular at 8%, followed by lingerie and pajamas (7%), romantic getaways (5%), and cosmetics/beauty products (4%). Only 1% of shoppers are bold enough to give a pet.
  • Jewelry shoppers spend around $45 per person on average.
  • Millennials continue to spend big:
    • Younger millennials (23-29) shell out an average of $266 on gifts.
    • Older millennials spend less, averaging $109.
  • Men spend $339 on average, while women spend around $64—a significant difference.

🛒 Where consumers shop

  • E-commerce reigns supreme: 41% of shoppers choose online platforms.
  • Amazon wins hearts: 36.55% of consumers prefer it for Valentine’s shopping.
  • Brick-and-mortar stores are still relevant, with 36.37% choosing physical shopping.

Ready to spark those sales?

With these stats in hand, you’re all set to create campaigns that resonate with your audience. Whether you’re targeting last-minute shoppers, millennials splurging on gifts, or DIY enthusiasts, there’s an opportunity to make this Valentine’s Day unforgettable.

Remember, the power of a thoughtful, well-timed campaign can turn hearts—and shopping carts—your way. So go ahead, spread the love and boost those sales.
