ICYMI: You can no longer bundle random consumable goods on Amazon

In line with the holiday spirit, Amazon India lowered its fees by 3%–12% to help small and medium businesses increase their margins this festive season. This would also help brands widen their reach without hurting their budgets.

Speaking of budgets, our agenda today is about a neat trick you can use to better manage your holiday funds.

AMAZON NEWS

If you’ve been combining products from different brands to create custom bundles, things just got a bit more complicated. As reported by Carbon6, Amazon recently updated its product bundling policy, especially for consumables like groceries, pet supplies, baby products, and health and beauty items.

The new rule, which took effect on October 14, aims to streamline what can be bundled and how to bundle items.

💭 But what does this mean for sellers like you?

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • No more brand mashups: You can no longer mix and match products from different brands in one bundle. For example, you can’t create snack packs with different chips and random drink brands.
  • Brand-owned only: Only the original brand or manufacturer can bundle products together.
  • Goodbye unbranded bundles: From now on, everything in your bundles must come directly from the source—no more mixing and matching on your own.

Note: Violators could face listing suppression, with enforcement starting in late Q4 2024. The good news? Sellers are being given a 30-day grace period to stay compliant.

🗒️ Getting into the nitty-gritty

Brands, particularly consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands, see this as a win. Why wouldn’t they, given that this rule allows them to operate on their terms and benefit their bottom line?

However, resellers are likely to feel the pressure from this change.

  • Creative bundles are no longer allowed. Sellers need to rethink their strategy, especially if bundling is a key part of their product lineup.
  • Time to sell non-compliant inventory. With Amazon starting enforcement by the end of Q4, it’s essential to clear any non-compliant inventory before they’re left with unsellable goods.
  • Uncertainty looms. There’s a 30-day warning before any listings are suppressed, but Amazon's notifications can be inconsistent. Many sellers are already feeling anxious about this lack of reliability.

Bottom line

The new bundling policy means big changes for Amazon sellers, especially those who rely on creative, multi-brand bundles. Now’s the time to review your inventory, adjust your listings, and make sure you’re playing by Amazon’s new rules.
