Amazon's Ad Business Is Nearing $20B a Quarter — And an AI Agent Is Now Running It

Amazon's ad business just crossed $20 billion a quarter, and an AI agent is increasingly the one steering the budget. Meanwhile Brussels just added a €2 tax on every small parcel arriving from outside the EU, Amazon is warning 300 million shoppers about a Black Friday scam wave, and three more marketplace shifts are worth knowing before peak season lands in full.

Here's what changed, and what it means for your business.

  • 🤖 Amazon's ad business is nearing $20B a quarter — and an AI agent is now running the show
  • 📦 Brussels just added a €2 tax on every small parcel entering the EU from outside
  • 🚨 Amazon just warned 300 million shoppers about a Black Friday scam wave
  • 📊 Quick hits: 400M Alexa shoppers, Walmart welcomes AI agents, and returnless refunds go global

AMAZON NEWS

Amazon's advertising business pulled in roughly $19.6 billion in Q3 2026, up about 12% year-over-year — and Amazon says its AI "Ads Agent" tool is increasingly handling campaign planning, bidding, and optimization on advertisers' behalf.

🔎 What's happening

  • Amazon's ad revenue grew to roughly $19.6–20 billion in Q3, a slight deceleration from prior quarters as Prime Day timing shifted some spend, even as the company leans harder on agentic AI to keep growth up, per Digiday.
  • Ads Agent, Amazon's AI system for managing Sponsored Products and DSP campaigns, is taking over more of the planning, buying, and optimizing that human advertisers and agencies used to do — raising the question of whose interest the agent actually optimizes for, Amazon's or the advertiser's, per Digiday.
  • Amazon maintains that outside AI shopping agents (like Meta's Muse) aren't cannibalizing its ad business, and is pushing its own Alexa and Ads Agent tools as the preferred AI layer for both shopping and advertising, per Adweek. Growth itself is decelerating slightly as Prime Day timing shifts play out, per Marketing Dive.

What this means for sellers

If Ads Agent is making more of your bid and budget calls automatically, put a human checkpoint on anything that increases total spend — don't let an agent judged on ROAS quietly redefine what "winning" looks like for your account. Pull your last 30 days of automated changes in your ads console and compare them against what you would have approved yourself.

Brussels Just Added a €2 Tax on Every Small Parcel From Outside the EU

Starting around November 1, 2026, the EU is charging a flat €2 handling fee on low-value parcels shipped in from outside the bloc — on top of existing customs duties — as Brussels moves to close the de-minimis loophole that's let ultra-cheap imports flood in duty-free.

🔎 What's happening

  • The European Commission's new handling fee applies to small parcels arriving from non-EU countries, layered on top of separate tariffs some member states are also testing, per Brussels Times.
  • The fee is explicitly aimed at the flood of ultra-low-cost parcels from Chinese platforms like Temu, Shein, and AliExpress, but it applies to any non-EU shipper — including US-based Amazon and DTC sellers who ship or dropship directly to EU customers from outside the bloc, per Paperjam.lu.
  • Several member states, including Italy, had already proposed their own versions of this fee before the EU-wide rule landed, suggesting more cross-border friction is coming even after this fee takes effect, per Pasquale Pillitteri.

What this means for sellers

If you ship from the US, UK, or anywhere outside the EU directly to EU customers — including FBM orders and any dropshipped SKUs — build this €2-plus-tariffs cost into your landed price now, or it eats your margin on exactly the low-ticket items most likely to get a holiday impulse buy. Sellers fulfilling from EU-based FBA warehouses aren't affected by this specific fee. Audit your cross-channel pricing now, before BFCM discounting makes any gap more visible than usual.

Amazon Just Warned 300 Million Shoppers About a Black Friday Scam Wave

Amazon has issued an urgent alert to its roughly 300 million customers, warning that impersonation and phishing scams spike every year in the run-up to Black Friday — and this year's wave is hitting earlier and harder.

🕵️ What's happening

  • Amazon is warning shoppers about scammers impersonating Amazon itself — fake order-confirmation texts and emails, spoofed customer service numbers, and phony "account suspended" alerts designed to harvest login credentials and payment details, per Retail Insight Network.
  • The warning specifically flags the Black Friday and holiday window as peak season for these attacks, since shoppers are primed to expect order updates and delivery problems and are more likely to click without checking, per ChannelNews Australia.
  • Coverage of the alert notes the wave includes fake "delivery failed, pay a fee to redeliver" SMS scams and bogus Amazon-branded customer support numbers that surface high in search results, per Ynetnews.

What this means for sellers

Brand impersonation and phishing at this scale erodes trust in all Amazon sellers, not just Amazon — expect a bump in buyers messaging you directly to verify legitimate order or return requests, plus chargebacks tied to accounts compromised elsewhere. Make sure your brand's official contact channels are clearly listed on your storefront, and never ask buyers for payment info outside Amazon's own messaging system, so you're not an easy target for look-alike scam reports either.

Quick Hits: 400M Alexa Shoppers, Walmart Welcomes AI Agents, and Returnless Refunds Go Global

Three marketplace moves worth tracking as AI-driven shopping and refund policy both keep shifting:

  • 🗣️ More than 400 million customers have used Alexa for shopping in the past 12 months, and Alexa shoppers spend roughly 50% more per order than average — Amazon is clearly betting its own voice assistant, not outside agents like Meta's Muse, becomes the default AI shopping layer, per Modern Retail.
  • 🤝 Walmart is opening its store to third-party AI shopping agents, giving them their own customer profiles with spending limits and guardrails — while Amazon continues to block outside agents from shopping on its platform, per TechCrunch.
  • ↩️ Amazon is expanding "returnless refunds" — where customers keep the item and get refunded without shipping it back — to more European shoppers, which could cut return-shipping costs for EU sellers but adds a new wrinkle to refund-fraud exposure, per Ecommerce News Europe.

What this means for sellers

AI-assisted shopping is quickly becoming a real acquisition channel (Alexa, agent checkout), and platforms are fighting over who controls that agent layer — meanwhile refund mechanics keep loosening in ways that help legitimate buyers but widen the door for return fraud (see Black Market, above). Make sure your product listings are structured cleanly enough for an AI assistant to summarize correctly, and keep an eye on your returnless-refund rate if you sell into Europe.
